Can you believe it?  January is almost ovah!  I can see the 'lite' of spring.  Am I an optimist? Or just desperate?  Either way, the days are getting longer, and I am happily cutting, pasting 'flower weight loss art' (see above).   I invite you to join with me and email me your best jpgs of your floral creations, albeit a collage or an actual floral arrangement, perhaps a photograph of a bud!?!  I don't know, but you do!  (Also see below ... this week's hot pick - see what you can create on your wall!)  Remember, anything you do to keep your hands and mind busy and away from food is a Creative Act of Weight Loss!!! Dear OLofWL ~  I am an "evening  eater."  I've tried to figure out why, but as soon as I sit down to relax after a busy day, I want to eat every thing I can think of.  I thought that I might be using food as a substitute for fun, so I took up crocheting. But that only worked for a short time.  I  thought maybe I was eating too many carbs for my dinner, but it didn't matter if I ate more protein.  If I don't eat , then I get really nervous. Thank you! ~ Helen

Dear Helen ~ Here follow 10 tips on how to curb, conquer and control nighttime eating.  I think they will be useful tips for you specifically, because it sounds as if nighttime is a vulnerable time of day for you.  In addition, you might also benefit from using nighttime as a time to let go of that nervous energy through meditation, breathing exercises, stretching, and singing.  

My guess is that this is not so much a food issue as it is a 'what's going on under the nerves' issue?  What's making you edgy?  What's on your mind?  What's really going on?  You might want to take advantage of my free Happiness Analysis.  Do the "deep dish life pie" exercise and see what insights snap, crackle and pop for you! 

10 Ways to Curb, Conquer and Control Nighttime Eating

1. Awareness First. Nighttime is often a vulnerable time of day. You might be tired. You may have said, "No, thank you," numerous times throughout your day, and you're worn down. It could be, more likely than not, that this is the first time that you are able to focus on your personal life and it's bringing up anxiety. Know that you are not alone. We could all (me especially) blow a day of healthful eating within 10 minutes of nighttime  snacking! Just knowing what to expect is helpful.

2. Keep Low-Fat, Low-Cal Snacks on Hand. It seems that our evening meals and snacks are higher in fat than breakfast or lunch, so it is especially important to make healthy nighttime choices. Perhaps some air popped popcorn, or a 1/2 cup of low-fat ice cream, or a little bit of protein.

3. Late Night Tea. Brew yourself a pot of delicious, decaffeinated tea and make it your end of night ritual. Nothing passes through your lips after the tea!

4. Get Creative. Like to knit, crochet, and/or cut & paste? Keeping your hands busy is helpful. The trick is to set up your 'craft' ahead of time. Just like you plan your meals; plan your after dinner activity. If you don't have the yarn and crochet hook right there, next to the sofa, you are likely to take reach for food instead.

5. Get Busy. Many people eat at night because they are bored. Take a dance class or join a book club. Make your nights fun and interesting. Get out of the house!!! Socialize.

6. Turn Television Commercials Off. If seeing food is a trigger, mue the food commercials, switch the channel or turn it off!

7. Eat Breakfast. One study after the other shows that those who skip breakfast end up eating more calories by the end of the day.

8. Take A Breath. Step outside and breath some fresh air for a few minutes.

9. Stretch It Out. If you are watching TV, stand up, sit down and shake it all about! Get on your stationary bike or the treadmill.

10. Play Musical Chairs. Sometimes the simple act of 'moving,' 'moves' a craving, 'moves' a mood. Moving changes your internal state. Move from one chair to another.

Righteous Recipe

Jonesing for Orange Salad ~ I was thirsting, starving, jonesing for grapefruits and oranges, like mad.  So, peeled, sectioned, chopped, poured and crystalized and bam wow! Delish!!!

  • 1 grapefruit , peeled, sectioned and seeded
  • 3 Naval oranges, peeled and cut into bite-sized pieces
  • ½ cup freshly squeezed orange juice
  • 2 ½ tsp. crystallized ginger, finely chopped
To make one portion:
  • Combine fruit, juice and ginger; mix gently.  EAT!!!


BONUS FRUIT SIMMER Recipe from Tushkateer Michele M:   "Take all the fruit (peel citrus, bananas, etc.) you have that may be about to go bad -I even put in a lime-cut it into tiny pieces-leaving on apple peels, if you want, add raisins &/or craisins, a LITTLE juice, and 4 (or so) tablespoons of no-sugar-added raspberry jam.  Cook in the crock pot or on stovetop--stirring periodically to avoid burning. Cook it down to a compote or preserves consistency. Taste, and add honey, if desired. Cool. Store safely--lasts about a week  ----great hot or cold on cereal, waffles, in crepes, and with yogurt.  (It also cleans out your innards! <- I've become totally Southernized!) Stay happy--and artsy!"   THANKS Southernized Michele!!!!
