Cum Laude Inductions Held January 26
Berkeley recently inducted its newest Cum Laude Society members, which include 11 seniors. Berkeley is one of approximately 300 schools in the country that has been granted a Cum Laude Society charter. The national organization of scholars was founded in the tradition of Phi Beta Kappa to recognize academic excellence, and this year’s senior class inductees include: Melissa Baldwin, Amanda Dhillon, Evan Eisenberg, Stephanie Levitt, Andrew Murray, Stephen Patrick, Patricia Pop, Michelle Rosario, Daphna Shaw, Jonathan Sheets and Joseph Sofia. Dr. Michelle Kirwan ’89 was the speaker, and her message to upper division students was that all events in life, both positive and negative, help build character and shape who you are.

Congratulations to the new inductees!

Students Celebrate International Week
This year’s International Week took place January 29, through February 2. The annual event was a wonderful opportunity for students in all divisions to celebrate many cultures and learn more about people and places from all over the world.

More than 45 nations were represented during the Lower Division’s “Parade of Nations.”

Several Headmasters from Spain visited Berkeley during International Week and toured the campus with Dr. Thom Morris and Berkeley guides.

On January 9, lower division students celebrated Epiphany.   One of Yale University’s men’s a cappella singing groups, The Society of Orpheus and Bacchus, serenaded upper division students at a January convocation.

Lower division students enjoyed a presentation by Benjamin Franklin as he told stories, played the harmonica and encouraged them to take pleasure in reading!

Amelia Bedelia Visits Berkeley
by Faye Yates & Nancy Shivers
Children were captivated by Herman Parish as he brought Amelia Bedelia to life January 18.  In two separate sessions, one for grades K-1 and one for grades 2 and 3, Herman shared the creation of the well-loved Amelia Bedelia stories, from the historical perspective of his Aunt Peggy Parish, to his decision to respond to the thousands of letters to keep the character and books going on after his aunt passed away.  Many thanks to Tammy Schimmel for helping us throughout the entire day and also to Dale Guenther and Yvonne Ferrelli, who kept the book-signing process so well organized.  Everyone involved considered the day a big success.  We’re certain that Mr. Parish will have wonderful memories of his visit to Berkeley.
