Jim Leach and Jill Lepore to Speak in Worcester Tonight
|
National Endowment for the Humanities Chairman Jim Leach and historian and essayist Jill Lepore will discuss the state of political discourse in America, past and present on April 14 at 7:30 pm at the Antiquarian Hall, American Antiquarian Society, 185 Salisbury St., Worcester. This program is part of a fifty-state American Civility Tour that Leach is conducting to raise awareness of how divisive and potentially dangerous harsh and hateful language can be. Chairman Leach will also be appearing at the State House, on WGBH’s Emily Rooney Show, and will be interviewed by the editors of the Worcester Telegram & Gazette and the Boston Globe. Free and open to the public.

| Ellen Rothman to Receive Bay State Legacy Award |

We are proud to announce that the sixth annual Bay State Legacy Award will be presented to Ellen Rothman at the Massachusetts History Conference on June 7. This award is given in recognition of an individual's contributions to the interpretation and presentation of Massachusetts history. As deputy director of the Jewish Women's Archive, and formerly as associate director of Mass Humanities, Ellen has spent her career promoting public history—developing exhibits and curricula, producing programs for public radio, and as an innovator in Web-based and online history. The award is presented by the Mass History Conference committee. |

LOWELL
Khmer Dance Costuming Workshop and Performance— Angkor Dance Troupe will cover the history of Cambodian folk and classical dance, show basic dance gestures, and do a "sewing into costume" demonstration. Saturday, May 15, 3:45—4:45 pm at the American Textile History Museum, 491 Dutton Street.

Mass Humanities made eighteen grants this past quarter totaling $90,049 for public humanities projects across the state, including:
$4,600 to install the core exhibit for the Henry David Thoreau Birthplace, newly preserved and renovated as a "green" building.
$5,000 toward performances and scholar-led discussions of Timon of Athens for inner city youth and South Boston communities.
$5,000 to install a permanent, hands-on exhibit based on the Truro Historical Society's collection of Native American artifacts.
