Our mission is to provide women with family planning options that work for them. This is why we were extremely concerned to read a recently published study that showed that an increasing number of women in the U.S. are not using any form of birth control despite being sexually active and not wanting to get pregnant. The study, which was conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics, showed that the number of women in the U.S. not using any form of birth control rose from 3.1 million in 1995 to 4.7 million in 2002. This means that a huge and growing number of women are at risk for an unplanned pregnancy. Reproductive health experts have a range of theories about what is causing this spike in risky behavior. Factors include: fears about the side effects of contraceptives, gaps in sex education, the cost of birth control, declining insurance coverage, and personal attitudes about family planning and childbearing.
