FAQ's: Why is the 27th Bead Dark?
Q: "Why is the 27th bead on my CycleBeads dark? I understand that the darker bead is meant to let me know if my cycles are long enough to use this method, but I thought my cycles were supposed to be between 26 and 32 days long. So shouldn't the 26th bead be the darker bead?"

A: You are correct that the darker bead helps a woman know if her cycles are long enough to use this method. To use CycleBeads effectively a woman's cycles should be between 26 and 32 days long. The darker bead is bead #27 because when a woman moves the ring to this bead, it means that she has completed 26 days of her cycle.

...because every woman should know.

Welcome!

CycleBeads are featured in the 2004 edition of Contraceptive Technology released earlier this month. This is exciting because Contraceptive Technology is the primary reference guide for health care providers working in family planning.

Being included ensures that an increasing number of health care providers will be able to counsel patients on how to use this effective, natural family planning option correctly. Check out the Effectiveness section of this newsletter to see how CycleBeads compare in terms of effectiveness to other methods included in the guide.

If your health care provider doesn't already know about CycleBeads, please let her know that she can find out more information in her most recent edition of Contraceptive Technology.

As always, if you have any ideas on how we can improve the Newsletter or if you have a story that you would like to share with us, please email us at info@cyclebeads.com.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Leslie Heyer

Effectiveness Comparison: How Do CycleBeads Compare?

CycleBeads compare quite favorably both in Perfect Use and in Typical Use to other family planning methods. This is due to the fact that they were designed to be easy to use and therefore, people tend to use them correctly. The charts below compare the failure rates of different contraceptive options. The different options are listed from most effective to least effective based on their Typical Use failure rates:

A Nurse's Story

Maureen D.
Registered Nurse
Phoenix, AZ

In the past, when a woman walked into our clinic and wanted to use a natural family planning method, we had to send her to a specialist. We simply did not have the ability to do the in-depth counseling needed. We are always hesitant to send patients elsewhere, because once someone leaves the clinic, there is a high probability that she will either not get the counseling needed or will engage in risky behavior before she does get proper counseling.

Now that our staff has been trained to provide counseling on CycleBeads and the Standard Days Method, that has changed. Having a simple natural option that we can discuss with these patients has ensured that they walk out of the clinic with a way to prevent pregnancy that will work for them.

I should note that many of our staff were trained in a one hour session, and felt comfortable counseling women immediately following. Also we work with a mostly Hispanic population so having all of your materials in both English and Spanish has been a huge help for us.

Thanks for giving us a tool that we can use.
