Q: "My patients don't ask for a natural method so why would I offer one?"
A: There are a number of reasons why healthcare providers should offer a full range of family planning options including a natural one like CycleBeads.
First, you may be missing out on potential patients. Women who want to use natural family planning are likely to go elsewhere if they don't think a particular provider offers it.
Second, many of your current patients may be interested in natural family planning, but don't know about it. Research shows that when women who did not previously know about natural family planning are told about it from a healthcare provider, approximately 22% say that they are likely to use a natural method in the future. And when providers have a set of CycleBeads with them, they generally find even more interest than that.
Finally, some of your current patients may be uncomfortable talking with you about natural family planning even though they are interested. We hear from many women who are using CycleBeads or other fertility awareness based methods who are afraid to tell their doctors because "she won't understand" or "he'll try to get me to use something else."
Women need to know that their doctors offer a full range of options and when a method is effective and works for them, that their doctor supports it.

Research: Fulfilling Unmet Need
Recent research published in the medical journal Contraception reports that CycleBeads fulfill an unmet need and bring new women to contraception. Researchers from Georgetown University's Institute for Reproductive Health found that when CycleBeads were introduced as part of the range of options available, more than 1/2 of the women who chose to use them were previously using no form of birth control. Furthermore, overall contraceptive use increased by 8%.
The study was conducted in six countries and included more than 1600 women. The original research article can be found in the March 2008 issue of Contraception. A news article summarizing some of the findings can be found here.

Case Study: CycleBeads in Senegal
According to a case study from UNFPA, couples in Senegal face many obstacles when it comes to reproductive health. These obstacles include shortages of resources such as reproductive health clinics, skilled birth attendants, and low-cost contraception; as well as religious and cultural beliefs that affect their willingness and ability to use certain birth control methods. These obstacles put women at risk for early and numerous pregnancies as well as inadequate obstetric care. With a maternal mortality rate of 1 out of 22, finding a contraceptive option that works for women in Senegal can be a matter of life and death.
