FAQ: Will Women Really Use a Natural Method?
Q: "Do patients actually want a natural family planning method?"

A: Yes. More than 10 million women in the U.S. (and hundreds of millions of women worldwide) will use a natural birth control method at some point in their lives. Interestingly, in the U.S., fewer than 1% of these women will learn about a natural method from their healthcare provider.  Most often they are learning about these options from friends, magazines, and online.

Furthermore, research shows that when given positive information about a fertility-awareness based family planning option from their healthcare providers, more than 20% of women indicate an interest in using a natural birth control option.

Women are interested in using natural family planning methods, but they aren't often learning about them from their doctors. Hopefully that will change as easy to use, easy to teach, effective natural options become available.

Happy Holidays!

We wanted to end the year by sharing some of the stories from women using CycleBeads. There are a range of reasons why a woman may choose to use a fertility awareness-based family planning option - concerns about side effects, an interest in better understanding her body, costs, or even cultural and religious reasons.  Some may simply think the idea is "cool". Whatever the reason, we appreciate that women are willing to share their stories with us on such a sensitive topic and tell us about the impact that this has had on their lives.

We're also in the process of collecting stories from providers about their experiences using CycleBeads with patients.  If you have a story about how you've used CycleBeads with clients and would like to share, please see our contact information below and let us know.

Sincerely,

Leslie Heyer

"When my fiance and I made the decision to take our intimacy a step further, I was firm about not wanting to take hormones. But what were my options after that? After researching "natural birth control" online, I hit the jackpot when I discovered CycleBeads. I love the basic format and simplicity offered by the beads, not to mention that they are pretty in my personal opinion! I think CycleBeads ought to be used around the world for women who can't afford healthcare or birth control and certainly can't afford to be pregnant. It's a wonderful tool to have and I tell all my girlfriends about it, as we are at that age where everyone is getting engaged, married, or having babies (or not wanting to yet!)."

"I have been struggling for years to find something that would work for me. This may sound weird, but I have an allergy to latex which rules out condoms. I've tried the Pill, but the side effects were too much for me. I even tried reading some of the textbooks written about natural family planning methods like the Billings Model and the Sympto-thermal method. Honestly, I'm pretty motivated and I like to think I'm smart, but the amount of work it took to figure it all out was ridiculous. This may sound overly dramatic, but this issue was seriously affecting my marriage and I was getting worried.

Finally a friend mentioned that she was using CycleBeads and showed me this cool set of beads. Wow! It just made sense. The beads were an elegant, easy solution to a complex problem. Problem solved!"

"My husband and I already have 2 kids and that is enough for now. We're not very religious, but the idea of using hormones is a little strange. No one in my family uses them and I've heard from friends about some of the issues they've had. I found out about {CycleBeads} from the clinic that I go to. They were doing a workshop with women in the area and they talked to us about our cycles and how they work. Its so easy. My husband and I love using this {method}. We've been using it for 8 months and have no reason to switch. Someday I'm hoping we will have another child and when we do, we'll know exactly which days we're most likely to have success." *

Changing Lives in Uganda
Internationally, CycleBeads are often being introduced to populations that have very limited resources. In some of these areas family planning can literally be the difference between life and death. Read the story in Uganda's leading website -  NewVision.com about how CycleBeads (known as Moon BeadsŪ in Uganda) are being used to address the needs of poor women living in a rural area who are skeptical of family planning. This simple, natural tool is making family planning available to women who otherwise would be using nothing. Click here to read the article.
