   New Online Training

Our colleagues at the Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University have developed an online training for health professionals.  The training reviews the scientific basis of the Standard Days Method, the family planning method on which CycleBeads are based. It also includes practice counseling sessions as well as additional educational resources to help health professionals counsel patients more effectively.

It is important that health professionals are able to provide appropriate counseling and medical advice to women who are using this natural option to plan or prevent pregnancy. Well informed providers are critical to the success of CycleBeads and the Standard Days Method as they can help women decide if this is the right method for them, decide what to do during the days when pregnancy is most likely, and answer questions that they may have.

The online training enables health care providers to train themselves in their free time in their own office. It takes about 2 hours to complete,  continuing education units are available, and it is free of charge. To find out more about the online training...

   FAQ's Answered

Answers to your most frequently asked questions...

Q: "I got my period while I was asleep, but don’t know if it came before or after midnight. How do I know if I’m on the first or second day of my cycle?”

A: If you get your period while you are asleep, you should consider the day that you wake up to be Day 1 (the first day) of your menstrual cycle. Move the ring to the red bead on the day that you start your period and check it on your calendar.

However, if you KNOW that you started your period anytime before midnight (even at 11:59PM), move the ring to the red bead that day and check it on your calendar. The next morning (or whenever you normally move the ring) you should move the ring to the following bead.

...because every woman should know.

Welcome!

We have exciting news to report in this issue of the CycleBeads Newsletter: an innovative, online training option for health care providers is now available from Georgetown University’s Institute for Reproductive Health.

While many readers of the CycleBeads Newsletter are not necessarily health care professionals, we want everyone to know about the work that is being done to educate the medical community on CycleBeads and the family planning method on which they are based. You never know when you'll be talking to your doctor and she'll want to know more. The online training is a great way for health care providers to get in depth information and feel comfortable counseling clients who may have questions.

We've also included in this Newsletter, interesting stories from two women who are using CycleBeads for very different reasons. One found that CycleBeads was the only family planning option she could afford. The other never considered herself to be the “natural family planning type”, but found that her needs changed after the birth of her first child.  Their stories are different, but we’re noticing a theme in the stories you tell us – easy, inexpensive, and natural family planning options appeal to a broad range of people for a variety of reasons!

As always, you’ll also find answers to Frequently Asked Questions and information on the latest stores and health care providers that offer CycleBeads. If you have any ideas on how we can improve the Newsletter or if you have a story that you would like to share with us, please email us at info@cyclebeads.com.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Leslie Heyer

Personal Story: "I Can't Afford Birth Control"

Kris T., Age 28
Retail Sales
Arlington, VA

"My fiancee and I have been together for three years and while we both work, we struggle each month to cover all of our bills. We have a lot of student loans to pay back and have to budget every dollar.

I was spending $30 a month on birth control, and found that each month I would put off going to the pharmacy to pick up my prescription.  Not because I didn't want to keep using birth control, but it was too expensive!!! I know that getting pregnant would be even more expensive than the $30 a month I had been paying, but I really didn't have it.

A friend told me about the [Standard Days Method] and it made sense to me. It was so easy and obvious. Paying less than $15 for a one time purchase of CycleBeads was an easy choice.

Please keep them low cost. It's important that women like me have something that they can use!"

Personal Story: "Natural Not My Nature"

Johanna S., Age 37
Management Consultant
Denver, CO

"I've been using the pill since I was 16 years old and never thought twice about it. I decided to have a child two years ago and since the birth of my son last June I've been hesitant to go back on the pill.

I never thought that I'd consider natural family planning. It wasn't something that had ever been an option for me personally. I thought it was something that people did only for religious reasons. But when I was carrying my son and then afterwards when I was breastfeeding, I became much more aware of the things that I was putting in my body. I realized that my needs had changed.

A friend of mine mentioned CycleBeads and I have to admit that at first I thought there was no way this was for me. But, when I better understood the information that they were based on, and I saw how easy they were to use, I decided to give them a try. I started using CycleBeads when my periods returned to a regular cycle length. And now, 8 months later, my friends like to refer to me as the "natural mama" - if you knew me, you'd know what a joke this is."
