Greetings from Zareen

What a great time to be alive! As I'm writing this newsletter article we are starting to bring in the new year, and that is very exciting. 2008. Wow! It's 2008 and this year could be the most exciting year in the whole history of humanity. People around the planet have woken up to the global warming problem and are starting to embrace solutions. We are on the brink of some of the most exciting discoveries in how to live and develop as a species. And most exciting of all, whatever we may discover on any day of this year can instantly be swept around the world into the consciousness of billions of people through the amazing communication tools we have at hand.

Balakovo Wolga Weekend

Almost every time at the beginning of a project like this we ask ourselves: “Why are we doing this?” And almost every time we answer ourselves at the end of a project like this: “Because the faces and eyes of the new dancers are so rewarding after the weekend; because the effect of the genius of the dances is so touchable and real.”

Train lore

So again we went. For the fourth time in six or seven years to the Wolga; for the first time to Balakova. We flew to Moscow where we saw the first snow of the year (rare for Moscow, too) and then 22 hours on the train South to Balakova. As before, our mentee Anya from Moscow accompanied us.

Live! at Lava

What’s it all About?

I recently returned from another delightful, heart-filled and fulfilling Lava Retreat. This retreat was like and different from any other Lava weekend. There were the many familiar faces, dear friends gathering once again to eat, Dance, and pray together. There were children, sometimes Dancing with us, sometimes hanging out in the library, sometimes off involved in the Children’s Program. There were glowing, new faces with light in their eyes and an eagerness to participate in the weekends’ experiences - for your fresh presence we are all in gratitude! And the warm, soothing waters for which the town is famous, offering opportunities for impromptu conversation and song.

For me, there is the other element - the task of registrar. Making plans, reservations, tracking details, coordinating with our cook, and lining out karma yoga volunteers. At times it seems like so much work, so many hours and miles for a two-day event. Although the event is intended to break even with our low registration fees, it always falls short no matter how close I try to track the numbers. Does it make sense to continue with these distant weekend retreats, with the rising costs of gas, food, and hotel expenses? What about environmental concerns, carbon emissions? Should we consider a retreat in Lava only once a year? These questions arise prior to each December and Spring retreat.

Friday begins with hours of unpacking, setting up, and decorating – how grateful we are all for those volunteers that arrive early and cheerfully assist! What would we do without you? Then folks begin trickling in; Genene and her karma yoga assistants are chattering and working away to prepare dinner, the dining hall begins filling up.... After sharing a warm, delicious meal together the tables and chairs disappear, karma yoga volunteers clean up, then the lights are dimmed.

We circle up, and Dancing begins. Ah! The joy, the energy, the hearts soaring together! All of my earlier questioning dissolves. Looking into the faces around me, before me, how can there ever be any question? How can connecting in this way with others be anything but positive? It fills a place in us that we all long for, enables us to connect through our voices, movements, and hearts. Alhamdulillah!

See you in March!

Children’s Dances of Universal Peace

Resource Network

All over the world caring adults are nurturing children and children’s spiritual development in many forms and modalities. We are far and wide and we are a great resource unto each other. After working in the children’s program in several Dances of Peace Camps I have considered what a gift it would be to meet all those people who work with children and families at the various camps. This coincided with a deep personal interest of the connecting all these peoples into one resource network, where we share our experiences, our ideas and wealth of knowledge in working and being with children. Now this is becoming a reality. With the direct goal to gain greater access to each other, our gifts and resources and the type of work we each do with children. This includes children’s curriculum program information, how Dances are used with children, and integrating children and families into Dance of Universal Peace experiences.
