Wilderness Camp 2007

Looking Ahead
with Bernie Heideman

This year’s Wilderness Camp theme is Bridge to the Future,  and I would like us to use the time between now and the actual camp to let some questions percolate in our Dance community.

How do we as spiritual seekers relate to the physical world that we live in? Scientists are saying that our lifestyles are contributing to/causing climate change that can be catastrophic for the human race and many other species. It has been shown that the CO2 level of our atmosphere has increased from 280 ppm (at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution) to around 380 ppm currently. Al Gores’ film, An Inconvenient Truth, shows current CO2 levels higher than at any time in the earth’s past. Our use of CFC’s has created a hole in the ozone layer at both poles; methane levels also affect our atmosphere. Children and the Dance

Village Potluck

I felt a need for a place that was just right for our children to interface with the community. Though they were not excluded from our weekly public meeting, few of the Dances were “kid friendly”. The earnestness with which they approached this social interaction as new bi-peds had been inspiring and added to the preciousness of the environment for the community. Later, as they were coming more into their own power and choosing creative alternatives to the choreographed movements (sometimes including gleefully running around the circle… in the opposite direction of the Dance movements, during the more reverent segments of a meeting), their was a need, as a parent, to curb their expression. Having two avid readers, they generally could be diverted to sit on the side with a book. Read the full Article by Hayra Fatah, Seattle DUP Community

Dancing in the Desert

Never in My Wildest Dreams would I have imagined last August as my seven Ireland Pilgrims and our guides, Kevin and Una, stood with me on the Island of Inishmurray praying and sending forth energy for joy, peace, harmony and love for all beings, that within two months I would be sealing those same intentions at the Great Pyramid in Egypt and leading Dances of Universal Peace in the Sinai Desert!

Carbon Neutral

Off-setting Carbon Emissions

Oneness Project continues in our efforts to be socially and environmentally conscious, adding this year a policy to offset the carbon produced by travel to Wilderness Dance Camp and our energy use while at camp. This we will do through contributing to an organization that will purchase carbon credits (i.e. quantified reductions from renewable energy, energy efficiency, or reforestation projects) and instead of using the right to emit carbon, retire the credits.

You may want to calculate your own energy usage. To calculate your carbon emissions, go to one of the following web sites http://www.americanforests.org/resources/ccc/ or http://carbonfund.org/site/pages/calculator/ It is interesting to note that just $99 a year can offset the carbon production per person.

A Little Background - from Bernie

Total US emissions were 7,122 million metric tons CO2 - equivalent in 2004, according to the EIA. Dividing by the US population of 299 million, this equals 23.8 metric tons of CO2 - e per person.  (To offset this each person in the country would have to plant 72 trees per year - or 12.6 billion trees for the whole country. At 300 trees per acre this is 42 million acres). The US has 2.3 billion acres total. So to offset by planting alone on US soil, we would have to plant 1.8% of our land to trees every year. There are other ways to offset carbon production, which you can read about on the websites listed above.

Instead of changing our policies to lower these levels, the world seems to be inclined to increase our use of fossil fuels and continue to increase the presence of these gases. For many years we have heard all sorts of doomsday prophesies, such as the Y2K prediction of collapse of our economic world. None of these have come true. Is there something different about predictions of dire consequences that will result if we do not control all these greenhouse gases?

Welcome to Oneness Project's e-newsletter. The past year has been a very busy one in our OP offices, with grant requests coming in, money flowing out, redesigning our website, hosting two weekend retreats at Lava Hot Springs, adjusting to our new venue for Wilderness Dance Camp, and keeping up with the weekly tasks. It is a labor of love, shared by all who participate in Oneness Project from the Trustee Council, Committee Members, and Staff to every Attendee at our events.
