Live! at Lava Retreat

Lava Hot Springs, Idaho
December 7 - 9

Oneness Project presents our 31st Live! at Lava next month. You are invited to join us for a weekend of friendship, sharing, dining, and Dances of Universal Peace. We will have dancers and dance leaders from throughout the region - Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Washington, and perhaps even more! There will be a concurrent Youth Program under the direction of Bob Effertz and special Young Adult gathering place and housing. We encourage early registration to assist with the planning of our cook and youth program; after November 22 there will be a $25 fee increase. For questions and information, please contact Shahar at 406.363.7211 or

In Loving Memory

Jon Jon and Jonah Stravers

The one we all called Jon Jon and his son, Jonah, were both killed in a car crash September 2, 2007.

We (this Boise community) first met Jon Jon just before December Lava in 2001, and we brought him with us. We all fell in love. What happens at Lava deeply touched him, so instead of passing through, he stayed in Boise. He danced and sang, played guitar, and studied the roots of the Dances. In mutual respect and delight, we made discoveries of friendship and spirituality causing more respect and delight. And then, Jon Jon met his partner, Kristen, and their son Jonah was born December 13, 2003. The two of them shared in the awareness of reading nature to understand life, and they gifted that to Jonah in their passion and love.

Chilean Caravan

Danzando en el Corazon del Mundo

We cannot thank Oneness Project enough for funding the Chilean Carvana Sufi 2007 in April in Santiago and Pucon, Chile. "Danzando en el Corazon del Mundo: Un Viaje de Transformacion y Extasis" (Dancing in the Heart of the World: A Mystical Journey of Transformation and Ecstasy) was guided by Tasnim Fernandez and Sharifa Oppenheimer. The retreat was organized and nurtured by Taj Loreto Gonzalez Lorca, dance leader since 1976 and professor of educational music. The quality of transmission through dance, zhikr, meditations, and the skillful and harmonious blend of energies and styles of Tasnim and Sharifa was quite wonderful. The music, enriched greatly by the extraordinary talents of many of the participants, was lively and joyous. We attended only the Pucon half of the retreat, but everyone we spoke with had only positive comments about the first part in Santiago.

Carbon Neutral
In keeping with Oneness Project's intention to reduce our events' impact on the planet, we donated money to offset the carbon emissions produced by folks traveling to camp as well as emissions we all created during our week together. Our contribution went to Carbonfund.org to support reforestation. You may learn more about them by visiting http://www.carbonfund.org .

Young Adult Retreat

 HINTERLANDS:
A small gathering of Young Adults.
A pre-Wilderness Dance deepening.
A history lesson. A future lesson. A caravan.
A Young Adult Oneness Project.
The blossoming YAsangha.

I recently had the opportunity to see old photos of Murshid Sam with his students in the Bay Area. There were some very familiar faces . . . minus a few years. The way the pictures pause time reminds me of the first childhood photo I ever saw of my mother. Her face was plump, her hair was short and her pudgy fingers were curled around a plastic doll. Her eyes though, and the shape of her smile, those things hadn’t changed. I got the same impression from the young people dancing around Murshid Sam in the photographs. They are quite obviously the same beings we love and respect today. Murshids and Murshidas, even Pirs, before they’d grown into their titles.

Dear Dancers,

Star and I want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all the love and support we’ve received over the past few months. I’m back to work now and feeling pretty well recovered. Your generosity has changed us forever. We feel so lucky and blessed to be part of this wonderful spiritual community. Ya Shakur!
