Staff News

This month we sadly said goodbye to Anna Wilson, a key member of The Nature Conservancy's NYC staff who has worked closely with the YPG over the last year and a half.  Thank you Anna!!

On the flip side of things, we are joined by new Conservancy staff members Mea Costa, Ben Nissim and Yoni Rabino.  Look for them at upcoming YPG events this fall!

The Nature Conservancy recently appointed a new President and CEO, Mark Tercek.  Mark comes to us from Goldman Sachs where he was head of the firm's Center for Environmental Markets as well as its Environmental Strategy Group.  Click here to read more.

Get Involved!

By becoming a member of the YPG, you will not only be supporting the work of The Nature Conservancy, but will also receive special access to members-only activities and be invited to become a YP Committee member.

YP Committees in the areas of Conservation, Events, Development, and Membership & Media are directly involved in helping to plan our events and to expand our efforts. They are not only a great way to get involved, but can also help determine whether a position as a YP Board Member might be the next step.

For more information about the Real Estate Group and the Real Estate Group Steering Committee, please contact Joel Papo.

For more information on the YPG or how to join, please visit our website or contact us.

Saturday, September 13th
Departure from NYC: 9:30am
Approximate Return: 5:30pm

Come join us on a fall hike at Bear Mountain in upstate New York!  We will hike up the mountain and summit at Perkins Memorial Tower.  At the top we'll eat lunch while enjoying views of the Hudson River, Harriman State Park and the surrounding Hudson Highlands.  For the descent, we'll take the oldest part of the Appalachian Trail, which was opened in 1923 at Bear Mountain.  This is a moderate hike, with some rock scrambling, and will take approximately 4 hours.

Please RSVP by Friday, Sept. 5th to Jenny Kellogg.

Conservation Spotlight: Preserving 320,000 Acres in the Crown of the Continent

In one of the most significant conservation sales in history, The Nature Conservancy and The Trust for Public Land have teamed up to purchase and conserve 320,000 acres of forestlands in western Montana.  This pristine wilderness has sustained all the same species — including grizzlies, lynx, moose and bull trout — for at least 200 years.  It is the only such ecosystem in the lower 48 states. Click here to read more about this groundbreaking project.

The deal is part of the Conservancy’s large-scale efforts to protect forestlands around the world.
Over the past five years, the Conservancy has protected 3.5 million acres of forestlands.  Click here to learn how you can make a gift to protect our planet's forests and have it matched by our YP Board!

Eco-Tip of the Month

Don’t unwittingly spread invasive species or diseases through your hiking boots!

The Nature Conservancy's invasive species specialist Barry Rice advises hikers to clean their boots after every use.  Boots collect a lot of debris, which may contain plant seeds foreign to an ecosystem or a disease such as sudden oak death syndrome, or Port Orford cedar root disease.  To clean your boots, remove any seeds or mud stuck between the tread of your boots.  And to be extra cautious, clean the boots with a diluted bleach solution.  Click here to learn more.
