Meet the
Young Professionals

Though she is one of the newest members of the
Young Professionals Board, Jin Jin Huang has been a dedicated YP member since 2005. 'Officially' only 22 years old, we're glad Jin Jin has so many more years to give to the YPG!

How did you become involved in the YPG?
I was first invited to attend a YP benefit in 2005. I was so impressed with the energy and the concept behind the Young Professionals Group that I started going to all the events! The more I went to the events the more involved I became.

What most inspires you in your work for the YPG?
What really inspires me the most is the energy and the people that I meet. The concept of the YPG—to bring together people who are passionate about conservation and the environment—is so powerful. That we can bring so many people and what they contribute to maximize the impact, and from that we can do so much. I’m very passionate about making sure people know the power that their individual impact can have.

How long have you been involved in the environmental movement?
I’ve always been appreciative of nature. Having grown up in a village in China I was constantly surrounded by nature. I’ve been exposed to the science aspect of conservation since the 8th grade when I went to the Academy of Natural Science in Philadelphia. My passion really blossomed from there. So I’ve always been thinking about it (conservation) but I didn’t know how to do anything about it. All that’s changed since I joined the YPG, though!

Are there any exciting developments in the engineering field that you think will have a positive impact on the environment?
I work in construction, doing engineering consulting so I'm very involved in development in the New York city area as well as other countries. These days companies are really leaning towards green building design in their new building systems due to increased desire for more efficient buildings in terms of energy consumption. The savings are incredible, so it works for all parties involved.

What accomplishment of the YPG are you most proud of?
I’m proud of how much money we’ve raised and the impact that we’ve had on local programs!

If you could be any plant or animal, what would you be and why?
If I could be any animal I would be a hummingbird. I’ve always imagined how wonderful it would be to fly. And they eat yummy flower nectar, not worms. And they’re beautiful!

An Update from The Nature Conservancy

As you know, virtually every sector of the global economy is feeling the effects of the financial crisis.  So, too, is the not-for-profit sector. At The Nature Conservancy, we are carefully examining what these challenges pose for us.

We have already implemented a 10% reduction in our fiscal 2009 budget, and we are now working diligently to explore ways to further reduce costs and increase efficiencies. With such an ambitious mission and conservation agenda, it is difficult to have to scale back plans, especially in light of the urgent conservation needs and opportunities across the U.S. and around the world. Yet, we are taking steps to prioritize our conservation efforts should a global economic recovery be delayed. As we adapt to new budget realities, we will remain guided by our mission, our values and our unflagging commitment to real conservation results.

We know that the challenges we face as an institution reflect those with which you are grappling in your businesses and for your families. More than ever, we appreciate your willingness to support The Nature Conservancy and our critical work during these uncertain times. Thank you.
